The Dangerous “Benadryl Challenge” Is Back

The "Benadryl Challenge" is a dangerous social media trend where teens take high doses of Benadryl to hallucinate on camera, and it's resurfacing again with potentially deadly consequences. Haven is urging parents to talk to their kids now, secure household medications, and know the warning signs.

We’ve received multiple messages in recent days from students who have seen the dangerous “Benadryl Challenge” on TikTok.

Parents, guardians, and educators need to be aware of this dangerous trend and talk to young people about its risks.

What is the “Benadryl Challenge”?

The “Benadryl Challenge” is a dangerous social media trend where people take high doses of Benadryl or similar medications to try to hallucinate. They often film themselves and share the effects on social media.

Is this a new trend?

No. This trend has been circulating for years. It tends to fade and then resurface. In 2020, the FDA issued a warning about it. Tragically, several young people have died after attempting this challenge.

Where are kids seeing this?

Most of the messages we’ve received involve students seeing it on Tiktok, but it has also appeared on YouTube, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

What should parents do?

Have a conversation about why this trend is dangerous.

Conversation starters:

  • “What’s the weirdest or dumbest trend you’ve seen on social media lately?”
  • “Have you seen anyone taking way too much medicine for views?”
  • “Why do you think people risk getting hurt to try to go viral?”
  • “What would you do if you saw something dangerous in your feed?”

Other recommendations for parents:

  • Keep internet-connected devices out of kids’ bedrooms at night
  • Store medications in a controlled location and monitor quantities
  • Share this information with other parents and educators

Anyone who suspects an overdose or medical emergency should call 911 immediately.
